Moneyball

Although based on a true story, it’s basically Brad Pitt if Brad Pitt was the General Manager of a Major League Baseball Club. I think I appreciated the story slightly differently to how an American audience would have because I genuinely had no idea how the events would play out whereas seeing it was based on a true story, American’s probably knew exactly how the Oakland Athletics fared that year in the competition. A good movie.

Alan Wake

An interesting gameplay mechanic involving shining a torch on your enemies before shooting them – a solid survival horror game with a solid story.

Uncharted 3

Uncharted 3

I was blown away by Uncharted 2, it was my clear game of the year for 2009, so I came into the third game in the series with high expectations. Overall, Naughty Dog delivers on a polished, absolutely beautiful looking game with incredibly high production values – but in the end, I still felt like I liked the second one better.

The bar was high, so to say that a game is not as good as Uncharted 2 by no means makes it a bad game, and Uncharted 3 is not a bad game, it is a very very good game. Unfortunately though, it feels like it is part of a franchise that has already peaked, and it had nowhere else to go. Whereas Uncharted 2 made me marvel at what could be accomplished in this generation of console games, Uncharted 3 had me feeling like we’d reached a limit and that something new and something innovated would be required in the next generation of games to truly take things to the next level.

All that said, if you own a PS3, you really should play this game. But not before you play Uncharted 2…

Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3

Always been a fan of the Gears of War series, and the third game ties up the trilogy brilliant. A polished, well refined game, with excellent graphics and tight gameplay. It also has immense replayability through all its online features. This is the first game where I’ve truly gotten into the online multiplayer side of things. I’m still playing the game to this day and I suspect I’ll be playing plenty more of it for weeks to come. A must have for any Xbox gamer, along with its predecessors.

Left 4 Dead 2

Zombies. Lots of zombies. My first properly foray into online co-op multiplayer was with this game, and it’s pretty fun. You really need to work together in order to get through the levels. It was frustrating at times, but overall a good game.

Real Steel

Real Steel

You’d be forgiven for wanting to simply dismiss this movie as stupid based on its premise along – robot boxing, but this film has a little more to it that makes it surprisingly entertaining. I think what gives it just that little bit more substance than you might expect is the very human story of the relationship between Hugh Jackman’s character and his estranged son. It’s ironic, but despite all the special effects and the action, what makes a film something is the relateable and human element, something other movies tend to forget. Not too bad.

Green Lantern

Green Lantern

Wow. They actually made a Green Lantern movie. I’m pretty biased about it – I enjoyed it. However, I can completely understand the criticism it received. It’s not a great movie, and since it didn’t do terribly well at the box office I wonder if we’ll ever see a sequel, but I’m glad I finally got to see the Green Lantern in action using his powers. Now that I’ve seen the Green Lantern movie, I have officially seen every movie I’ve ever wished to get made. Everything else from here on in is a bonus.
