The perfect mix of nostalgia and playing to the elements that made the original so popular, this built on the first movie and probably received all the goodwill from that movie transforming it into the box-office gold it received. Probably not as good as the original, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
Fantastic Four
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
The Mission Impossible movies have really gone from strength to strength (with the notable hiccup of MI2) – I would suggest this one was my favourite. Great set piece scenes, an intriguingly powerful villain, and a particularly strong female character. She was strong in her own right, never needed “saving” and never was reduced to a simple love interest to the male lead. I would love to see more of just that character.
Ant-Man
A very unlikely superhero to make a movie for and its success is testament to the strength of the Marvel brand. As a movie on its own merits, it is enjoyable, but unremarkable and a little cookie cutter in terms of its structure. In fact on closer analysis its plot points are quite similar to the original Iron Man in terms of the villain arc, mixed with a run of the mill heist caper. Still, a lot of fun.
Mad Max Fury Road
Relentless. Limited plot, limited characterisation, lots of explosion and carnage. It is a Mad Max movie through and through, you either like that or not. In many ways it felt like the movie George Miller would have always wanted to have made of Mad Max if he had had the budget. Now he did, and this is what you got.
