The teaser trailer for the third Mummy film came out today, and I have mixed feelings about it. I am a big big fan of the Mummy movies, the first DVD I ever bought was "The Mummy", and so I feel very strongly about the movies. With the teaser out, I started to reflect on whether or not this movie has the potential to live up to it’s predecessors.
As you can immediately tell from the teaser, it has Brendan Fraser back as Rick O’Connell – that’s a big tick, and Jet Li as a new mummy this time instead of Arnold Vosloo’s Imhotep. That’s cool, I can live with that, changing things up a little. A little…
Rachel Weisz is gone, but the Evelyn character is still there, now played by Maria Bello, and if the teaser is any indication, with a bad English accent. Jon Hannah is back as Jonathan, but being the token comic sidekick that he is in the movies, I’m indifferent over his return.
Finally, and most troubling is Stephen Sommers isn’t helming the film – he’s too busy working on G.I. Joe. In his place is Rob Cohen, of "The Fast and the Furious" and "xXx" – neither of which fill me with loads on confidence. Is this going to be another "X-Men 3" situation where the third movie of a trilogy sucks balls because the original director leaves and the studios put another big action director in charge and he cocks it up??
Only time will tell. Please Cohen, don’t do a Ratner.
